First Lieutenant, 736th Bomber Squadron, 454th Bomber Group, Heavy; U.S. Army Air Forces. Son of Arthur Francis Batz and Etta (Kowalski) Batz of Antelope, CA. Entered the service from California. Awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Missing in Action: lost when the B-24 he was piloting (nicknamed "Ophelia Bumps") was shot down and crashed in the Bay of Agay, off the town of Agay near Saint-Raphaël, France. Four of the 10-man crew survived the crash and were taken prisoner by the Germans. The wreck of the plane was discovered in 1984.
