Mr. W.W. Benson Dies Wednesday Funeral Thursday
Mr. W.W. Benson, of a pioneer Cherokee County family and in later years a Canton merchant until his retirement more than a year ago, died here Wednesday morning at the age of 78 years.
Mr. Benson was one of Canton's most lovable characters, admired by his friends whom he numbered by the hundreds. He was related to the Johnston, Dean and Perkinson families, of Woodstock.
Mr. Benson, familiarly known as "Uncle Walt" was born near Woodstock, was a merchant in Woodstock for 25 or 30 years, spent about 20 years as a traveling salesman selling shoes, and was in business in Canton for 11 years, retiring when the firm of Benson, Cook and Company dissolved.
Since that time he had lived here at the Hotel Canton.
Mr. Benson was for more than 50 years a member of Woodstock Baptist Church, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge there, both of which he loved. Until failing health prevented, he went regularly to Woodstock on Sundays to teach the Men's Bible Class there.
He was married to Miss Villa Boring, of Woodstock, a sister to Dr. J.R. Boring, of Canton, and Mrs. W.L. Dean of Woodstock. One child survives, Mrs. Paul Dobbs of Atlanta.
Nieces are Mrs. J.H. Johnston, of Woodstock, and Mrs. George Defoor of Atlanta and a nephew, Bryan Benson, of Atlanta.
H has a large number of great-nephews and nieces, including one great-great-great niece, Miss Mary Carson, granddaughter of Mr. W.H. Johnston of Wilmington, Cal.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Woodstock Baptist Church by Rev. E.T. Booth, assisted by the Rev. O.M. Seigler, of Canton, with burial in Enon Cemetery. Jones Mercantile Company in charge.
