Gary was born in Spencer, Iowa where several of his father's siblings were born as well. Gary's father, Floyd Miller was born in Williston, ND to Roy and Ella C. Larson Miller.

Ella was the oldest of six children born to Norwegians, Susan and Anders (Andrew) B. Larson. Andrew was the only child born in America of eight children. His siblings and parents were born in the Sogn Fjord of Norway. Andrew's mother, Kristi Hansdatter Svardal was my g.g.grandmother Kari Hansdatter Svardal's older sister and they were on the same ship from Norway to America inn 1851 with their husbands and children. Within 4 years of immigrating to America, Kristi and Kari, along with their sister Brita and brother Per Svardal, all settled on farms in Dodge County, MN. My ancestors remained on their farm the rest of their lives, as did Brita's and Per's families.

Kristi's family moved about 1874 to Mower County, a few miles south and a little west. Within a few years, all but one of her children moved to counties bounded by the Red River, and Kristi's son Anders eventually moved to Williston, ND where Gary's father was born.
