Death: Aug. 10, 1892

A native of Kreuznach, Prussia (Germany), Jacob Wirth came to America and in 1868 opened a restaurant and bar in Boston he named after himself. In 1878 the restaurant moved to its current Stuart Street location and is the second oldest restaurant still operating in Boston. He specialized in serving up the food and drink of his native country. After his death his wife Maria and son Jacob ran the restaurant.

Jacob Wirth, sr. was my great-grandfather, and I was named after his sister, Elisa Fitler. The portrait on this page was over the mantelpiece at the house in Beacon Hill, Boston, where I spent my holidays while I was growing up.
