Dr. Daniel Lindsay Bratton, 68, of 130 Emory Drive, Jamestown, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday (June 10, 2001) in WCA Hospital. He was born August 27, 1932, in Nyack, N.Y., the son of the late John William Bratton and Margaret Augusta Lindsay Bratton. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Allegheny College, Master of Divinity degree from Drew University, and Master of Arts degree and Doctor of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. He had also received honorary Doctoral Degrees from Allegheny College and Gannon University. An ordained United Methodist Minister, his work experiences included Adelphi University, where he served as Vice President for Student Affairs from 1959 until 1971; Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Maryland from 1971 to 1973; and President of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, from 1973 until 1983. In 1984, he became the 15th President of the Chautauqua Institution, retiring this past December, 2001. During his 16 year tenure, some of his major accomplishments included five U.S. - Soviet Conferences, two at Chautauqua, one each in Riga, Latvia and Tbilisi, Georgia, and one at the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, along with major buildings and grounds improvements, Chautauqua Institution's endowment was increased by $33 million. The start of the 2000 season at Chautauqua was marked by the newly renovated and enlarged Normal Hall, home of the Chautauqua Conservatory Theater Company, being renamed the ˜Bratton Theater.” Professional and civic activities include membership on the Government Relations Advisory Committee, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, Jamestown YMCA, Blue Shield of Western New York, Chautauqua County Vacationlands Association, Chautauqua County Committee on Tourism, and most recently, the initial executive director of the Robert H. Jackson Center, Inc. in Jamestown. Accomplishments aside, Dan held his family above all else. He was a devoted, ardent New York Mets fan, and also had a large interest in the American presidency. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Wanita Cooper Bratton, whom he married June 20, 1970; three daughters: Robin Bratton-Bias (Val Bias) of San Francisco, Danielle Divito (Michael J. Divito) of Buffalo, and Ashley Bratton of Jamestown; three sons: Matthew Bratton of Rockville, Md.(Julie), Joshua Bratton of Jamestown, and Adam Bratton (Carissa Bodenmiller) of Falls Church, Va.; a grandson, Alexander Daniel Divito of Buffalo; a sister, Jacqueline Hart of Binghamton, N.Y, and her children, Mary Edwidge, Elizabeth Ann, and Robert Christopher Hart. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Hall of Philosophy, Chautauqua Institution. The Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, Director of the Chautauqua Department of Religion, the Rev. Dr. Ross Mackenzie, Chautauqua Historian, and the Rev. Anthony F. Rigoli, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Buffalo, will officiate. Burial will be in the Chautauqua Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Daniel and Wanita Bratton Endowment Fund for The Chautauqua Foundation, Chautauqua, New York, 14722.
