Ralph Alvin Clegg died peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 27, 2004. He was born October 31, 1918, and raised on Clegg Rd in Lambertville, MI, by his parents, Alonzo & Cecil (Thorton) Clegg. He was a graduate of the old Lambertville High School. In 1939 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He took boot camp in San Diego, Ca. and, upon graduation he was assigned to sea duty qualifying for service on the USS Honolulu and the USS Boise. In August of 1942, Ralph was transferred to the first Marine division where he participated in action against the enemy of Guadalcanal, Cape Glouster, New Britain, and the battle of Peleliu Island in the South Pacific. He was the recipient of numerous awards including: Navy Commendation Medal with one Gold Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service medal with fleet, american campaign metal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver star, WW II victory Medal and the Presidential Unit Commendation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. Ralph achieved the rank of Sergeant by the time of his Honorable Discharge in 1945.
He married his high school sweetheart, Gloria VanDoren, in July of 1946.

Ralph was a hard worker all his life with dual employment at Gerity Schultz in Toledo during the afternoon shift and truck farming his 40 acre farm during the day and selling at the Farmer Market.
Ralph was a Life Member of the VFW Post 9656 in Lambertville where he was a past Quartermaster and Trustee. He was a member of the National Riflemans Association and donated to numerous charitable organizations in his lifetime. He enjoyed gardening, morel mushroom hunting, trips to Vegas and frequent gatherings with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, He was proud of the fact that his family tree could be traced back to the Mayflower through the John Alden line.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria; his brother, William Clegg, and son Robert A. Clegg. He is survived by his favorite niece, Carolyn (Clegg) Rohrback, and his children, David M. Clegg of Texas, Marsha L.(Ray)Sebetto of Michigan, Barry L. Clegg of Nevada, Gregory L. (Cheryl) Clegg of Michigan, Ronald J (Theresa) Clegg of Michigan, Patricia A. (Jeff) Schuster of Michigan, Susan M. Young of Mihigan and Thomas S. Clegg of Michigan. Ralph had 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Ralph's wishes for cremation and a military service, his family will scatter his ashes on his much loved farm.
