J.W. Browning, at the time of his passing, had almost 100,000 acres of land holdings in Yolo, Sutter, Butte, Colusa and Glenn counties. He died at his home at the old Angus Ranch northeast of Gridley. His father was Richard Samuel Browning who came to California in 1849. His wife Cecilia Taylor Browning preceded him in death by 12 years. A son, Weldon died in 1897.His survivors were his son, John Lendell Browning, and his daughters, Aileen Armstrong and Elma Schehr.
