Thomas Melville Hosterman...THE ARTIST
He was born in 1852 in Nova Scotia...the son of John Edward and Sarah Minns (Howe) Hosterman. The family lived on the Northwest Arm where his father and uncle ran family businesses located near Chocolate Lake. He had two brothers, John Howe and William Charles Hosterman. Of John Howe Hosterman there is little information but his younger brother William Charles Hosterman, married and had two children. He died aged 34 in 1891.
Thomas Melville Hosterman has a military record serving voluntarily for at least two years in the militia as a Private in the 63rd Regiment of the Halifax Rifles in 1872 and 1873.
He married Margaret Doyle in 1878. Her family also lived on the Northwest Arm. They had three sons, John Edward, William Seamore and Walter Bertram Hosterman. It's believed that Margaret died shortly after her third son was born in 1881. All their sons lived to adulthood but William and Walter both died in their 20's.
Thomas Melville Hosterman moved to Massachusetts sometime between 1884 and 1885 according to census records. He might of left his children with his parents until he got established in MA. Census records for John and Walter show them coming to the US between 1889 and 1890. Their grandmother, passed in 1887 and their grandfather in 1889. It appears there was a lawsuit involving the Hosterman land and it's possible at that time the land passed out of the family's hands.
Thomas remarried in 1892 to Helen (Perry )Chace, a widow. My dad said she was called Nellie. They both lived into their 80's.
Thomas Melville Hosterman did many paintings that have been passed down through the generations. His artwork is dearly treasured by his family.
