Maud Cecil Skaggs was born 25 Sep 1889 in Ottumwa, Kansas, the original community of which was along the banks of the Neosho River, and is now flooded by the John Redmond Reservoir. In 1906, Maud moved with her family to Fredonia, Kansas where her father, Joseph Lively Skaggs, became a wealthy businessman.
As a young well-educated woman Maud taught children in the local schools until her marriage to Frank Darst 12 April 1912 in Fredonia. Upon her marriage, she moved from town to Frank's family farm a few miles southwest of Fredonia. They raised five children on this farm: Bernard; John; Elizabeth "Doreen", Betty; and Gwendolyn. The Great Depression of the 1930s left the Darst family struggling, and on 29 Nov 1942 Frank Darst died. Maud was unable to keep the 40-acre farm and finally sold it in 1944 for $3,000.
Essentially homeless, Maud struggled for the next couple years until she met Clem Steininger. The married in Wellington, Kansas 14 April 1946, and made their home in Medford, Oklahoma. They lived there for several years until old age caused them to move closer to family. Maud's final years were spent with Bernard, Gwen, and John nearby.
She was a kind, loving person.
