Letter Carrier John Gilmer Dix, 64, a resident of Vienna since the 1960s and a retired letter carrier, died of lung cancer Aug. 9 at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Mr. Dix delivered mail in Vienna from the 1960s to the early 1990s. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Rural Letter Carriers Association and was union steward at the Vienna post office.
Mr. Dix was born in Andover, Va. He moved to Capitol Heights in the 1940s and was a 1952 graduate of Suitland High School.
He served in the Army in Korea during the Korean War. He served from 1954 to 1966 with the Air Force, including a stint in Vietnam during the war there.
He worked for Reynolds Aluminum in Petersburg, Va., before moving to Vienna.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he coached Little League and Babe Ruth teams in Vienna. He was a Moose.
