William N. Croggon Dies in His 86th Year
Was a Member of an Old South Washington Family
Which Located There in 1850
William Newton Croggon, for many years a prominent merchant of the southwest, died Saturday afternoon at
his residence, 636 E street southwest. He was 86 years of age, and had been ill but a few days.
The funeral will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. T.E. Davis, pastor of
Westminster Presbyterian Church of which the deceased was an attendant, will be officiating clergyman.
Interment will be in Congressional Cemetery.
Mr. Croggon was born in London in 1828, and when a small child came with his parents to this country, the
voyage, which was made on a sailing vessel, taking three weeks.
The family resided for some time in Alexandria, Va., and in 1850 came to this city and settled in the
southwest section.
Pioneer Groceryman of That Section
Mr. Croggon embarked in the grocery business at 8th and G streets southwest when he attained his majority,
remaining there until after the civil war, when he removed to the corner of 7th and E streets southwest. He
remained in partnership at this location with his brother, John Croggon, until 1895, when he retired to give
his time to managing his extensive realty holdings.
In 1894 Mr. Croggon married Miss Ida Lee of this city, who survives him with four children--Frances
Smallbridge, Mary Esther, William Newton, Jr., and Ida Elizabeth Lee Croggon.
