Truett H. Allen
Mr. Truett H. Allen, 78, died Monday, August 17, 2009, at North MS Medical Center of Eupora.
Funeral services will be 11 am Thursday, August 20, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Eupora with burial in Webster Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Webster County with military honors. Visitation will be today from 5 pm until 8 pm at Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora.
Mr. Allen was born January 20, 1931, to Rev. W.I. Allen and Abbie Carter Allen in Oakman, Alabama. He was the fourth son of nine children. His father was called to McComb, MS to preach in 1935, and then to Winston County to preach. Truett entered Winston Co. schools and graduated from Louisville High School in 1950. At the age of 17, he was in the National Guard and when the Korean War broke out, Truett transferred to the U. S. Air Force. He followed his two brothers footprints making a career in the Air Force for 23 years.
In 1955 while stationed in Greenville, MS, he met and married Louise Turner Vaughan. Within a year Louise was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
While in the Air Force, Truett received several citations for a job well done. Due to Louise's health, he retired from the Air Force in 1972 in order to care for her full time. He purchased a small farm in the Fame Community in Webster County. He cleared land for pasture and had 2 catfish ponds and 20 cows.
In 1975 he was with the Mississippi Cattlemens Association where he served as president 3 different times in 9 years.
In 1980 and 1981 Truett raised money for the MS Society, organizing the MS chapter in Webster County. During these years he was instrumental in getting handicap access to public buildings and functions. For instance, the ramp on the north side of the courthouse, the Eupora and East Webster School gymnasiums, and the Eupora Hospital restrooms. Louise died in 1992.
In 1994 he married Mary Johnson Newton of Eupora. They raised catfish and cows and had a lime spreading business. In 2000 he retired and sold the farm.
Mr. Allen was a Mason.
Truett is survived by his wife Mary Newton Allen; sisters, Mary Katherine Hurley and Effie Lynn "Micky" Allen of Jackson, TN; brother, Wistar (Joanie) Allen of High Point, NC; stepsons, Henry "Buddy" Vaughn, Ricky Newton, Donald Newton, and Barry Newton all of Eupora; stepdaughters, Ruth Ellen (John) Vaughn, Linda (Tommy) Hitt, and Joye Johnson of Eupora; grandchildren, Heath Vaughan in Iraq, Layne Vaughan of Eupora, and Roger Vaughn of Maryland; eight step grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews and a dear cousin Raymond Allen, of Louisville Nursing Home.
