Rev Edmund F O'Rourke, OSFS

Fr Edmund O'Rourke, age 87, a longtime missionary priest with the Oblates of St Francis de Sales, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at Annecy Hall, Childs MD. He had been retired and living at the Oblates' home since 2002.

"Fr O'Rourke's near-30 years of ministry to the missions in South America points directly to the generous spirit that marked his life as an Oblate and priest," Rev James J. Greenfield, OSFS, provincial said. "He responded to the missionary call in the early '60s when the Pope called for more American priests to serve in Latin America. This is just one example of the giving nature of Fr O'Rourke."

A native of Philadelphia, young Edmund graduated from St Joseph's Prep School in Philadelphia in 1941 and enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in economics in 1946. After his graduation from college, he served as a naval officer in World War II in the Pacific theater of operations. He then entered the seminary of the Oblates in Childs in 1950 and made his First Profession on September 13, 1951. He later studied at both DeSales School of Theology and the Catholic University of America in Washington DC, in preparation for the priesthood. He made his Perpetual Profession on September 14, 1954. He was ordained a priest in Wilmington DE, by Bishop Edmond FitzMaurice on June 9, 1956.

Prior to his 29 years as a missionary in Brazil, he taught at several Oblate high schools, including Northeast Catholic High School for Boys in Philadelphia PA. After his retirement from the missions in 1992, he served as chaplain to the Visitation Sisters in Wilmington DE, who have since relocated to Tyringham MA.

Fr O'Rourke is survived by his confreres in the Oblates of St Francis de Sales.

Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial were celebrated on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Our Lady of Light Chapel. Interment immediately followed in the Oblates Cemetery.
