Son of Michael Dottridge and Elizabeth Athill of England.
Samuel was from an industrious family in London, England known for its land holdings, lumber works, carpentry and the funeral business.
Samuel came to Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the 1805 and apprenticed as a carpenter to John Brewster in Brewster, MA. In 1807 at age 21, he began his own carpentry business building homes. Samuel became a founding father of Cotuit, a carpenter with interests in the salt works industry and schooners.
He married Abigail (Kilby) Chase on 5 June 1808 in Harwich, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Thomas Kilby and Anna Wixom an Old Cape Cod family from Brewster, Massachusetts.
