Royse E. Barnette, 84, a 6-year Colton resident, and 56-year San Bernardino resident, died November 22, 1985.

A postal career employee, Royse had almost 38 years of post office service, all of it in San Bernardino.

A native of Texas, he was educated in Oklahoma and came to San Bernardino in January, 1923. He began his postal career in September, 1927, serving as a substitute carrier in the San Bernardino Post Office. His next post was clerk and was appointed foreman of clerks in November 1936. He was promoted to superintendent of mails in 1941 an served 17½ years in that post. In January 1959, he was promoted to assistant postmaster. He was named acting postmaster January 1961 and was confirmed in the post in August 1963. During his service as postmaster, the Zoning Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code was instituted.

Royse was very active in San Bernardino civic affairs. He served as chairman of the Arrowhead United Fund's federal division; was on the AUF board of directors and budget committee; was chairman of the Tuberculosis and Health Association of San Bernardino County's Easter Seal program.
He was a life member of the Faternal Order of Elks, Lodge No.836, San Bernardino; a life member and Past President of the Exchange Club of San Bernardino; and the Chamber of Commerce of San Bernardino.

He is survived by his wife, Esther of Colton; daughter, Joyse Evans of Colton; sister, Maida Boyd of Arizona, and three grandchildren.

No formal funeral services were held and entombment was in Mountain View cemetery.
