Husband of Nancy Pridmore. Father of George Andrew Byars. Served in Co. F, 18th SC infantry CSA. William's parents were Drury and Matilda Byars.

The 18th SC was originally part of Gen. N.G. Evans "Tramp" Brigade and fought at Second Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg and Jackson, MS. Note that the 18th SC Infantry, then part of Elliott's Brigade, was the unit that was almost directly above the explosion on July 30, 1864 that is known to history as the Battle of the Crater. It is unknown whether William was injured in the explosion.

Gravesite Details

Some genealogical sites indicate a birth year of 1831. However, the 1870 census taken on July 30, 1870 has his age as 38 and the 1880 census taken on June 4, 1880 has his age as 46. Years 1832 or 1833 are therefore more likely.
