Funeral for John Bateman will be held Saturday, Dec 31 at noon in Etna LDS Ward. Family will greet friends at the Schwab Funeral Chapel in Thayne on Friday Dec 30 from6-8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to services at the church.
John Delbert Bateman left this earthly existence early on Dec 27, 2011 after a battle with cancer. John was born in Afton on Dec 3, 1949, the third child and oldest son of Reynold Wiffen Bateman and Verda May Williams Bateman.
He attended grade school in Etna, and Jr. High and High School in Afton, graduating in 1968.
He served in the Southwest British Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1969 to 1971. He earned a degree in diesel mechanics in 1974 from EIVTC after which he returned to Etna to run his dairy farm, which he owned and operated for the rest of his life.
On June 18, 1971 he married his eternal sweetheart and the love of his life, Holly Peterson, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Five children were born to this happy union; Corbin, tifany, Alissa, Kelvin and Jordan.
Although his farm kept him busy, John made time for vacations with his wife and children, including two road trips through Montana, a dairy tour in Ohio, two cruises with Holly"l family, a vacation to Disneyland and a family road trip to Mount Rushmore.
John enjoyed many hobbies. He purchased a touring motorcycle so he could take Holly on long rides. He and Holly also enjoyed ballroom dancing together. John tied flies, enjoyed leather-work, horse riding, target shooting with his wife and children and reloading ammunition.
John took pride in the success of his farm, and he worked diligently at increasing the production and improving the quality of his herd until April 2011, when his diagnosis of cancer forced him to quit.
John was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many positions in the church throughout his life. He was scoutmaster in the Etna Ward for many years, helping many boys achieve the rank of Eagle. Many of them still look to him as their example. John also served as elders quorum secretary, elders quorum president, high priest group leadership and first counselor in the bishopric, At the time of his death, he was serving as the instructor of the eternal marriage class.
John served on the board of the Etna Pipeline Co. for many years, succeeding his father and grandfather, and was instrumental in having a new and much needed water system installed. He also served as the water operator for the newly formed Etna water and Sewer District.
John was a kind, loving and thoughtful husband and father, and he doted on his grandchildren. He was always helpful and generous with his time and resources to everyone he knew and everyone who needed him.
John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Holly Bateman; his three sons; Corbin bateman of Sheridan, Kelvin Bateman of Etna.; and Jordan Bateman of Casper; his two daughters; Tifany Bateman of Freedom; and Alissa Papi of Etna; his mother, Verda Bateman of Etna; his three sisters; Lynette Peterson of Salem, Idaho; Brenda Dille of Burley, Idaho; Kathy Schatz of Basin, Wyo.; his brother, Lance Bateman of Etna and 11 grandchildren; Alexandria Clearwater, Randy Bateman, Steven Bateman and Jacqueline Ross of Sheridan; Ivy Abel, TJ Abel, Trista Wellard and Tori Wellard of Freedom; Luna Papi and Bella Johnali Papi (due in March) of Etna; and Connor Weston Bateman of Etna.
He was preceded in death by his father, Reynold Bateman.
Services were held on Saturday, Dec 31, 2011 at the Etna Ward Building and interment was in the Etna Cemetery.
