Alpine--Eugene Broadwater, 72, of Alpine, died June 20 1991 at his home at Lakeview Estates from cardiac arrest.
Graveside services were directed by the Schwab Mortuary and conducted by Father Leon Klimchzyk of the Catholic Mission in Jackson. Military honors were presented by VFW Commander Floyd Hunsaker and interment at the Alpine-Etna (Amesville) Cemetery.
He was born Dec 7, 1918 at Middle Bourne, WV to Charles Lester and Hellen Williams Broadwater, and the youngest member of his family of two brothers, Charles and Dan.
The family moved from West Virginia to California early in Gene's childhood where his father was an educator. He received his formal education at El Segundo High School and graduated from the University of Redlands, CA with a degree in socialology.
Following his father's footsteps he attended his master's degree at the University of Southern California. He taught for one semester before volunteering for duty with the U.S.
Army Air corps in World War II where he was assigned as a physical training and casualty officer and entered the army Reserves at the end of the war at the rank of first lieutenant.
He married Jeanne Ewing on April 20, 1943 and tow sons were born to them, David and Douglas bother of California. Gene's teaching career was interrupted for the second time when he was called to active duty for the Korean conflict. They tour of duty took him to England and Guam where he was assigned as assistant adjutant to the bomb squad for the Strategic Army Command. He retired from the U.S.Army Reserves at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1978. His teaching career spanned a 40 year period in physical education, history and administration. The last five years of which he spent as the assistant principal of Culver City High School, Culver City, CA. He also served a total of 12 years serving on two different school boards and retired from teaching in 1982. He was also appointed to the board that established the Southern California Regional Occupational Center for Post High school Students. Served also as a counselor to the Boy Scouts of America.
Eugene and wife Jeanne, discovered Alpine in 1974 and purchased a mountain cabin that became their home away from home where they spent as much time here as in Laguna Niguel CA.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeanne Ewing Broadwater, two sons, David of Atascadero, CA and Douglas of Los Angeles, CA and three grandchildren.
