Maurice Francis Herring was an educator and administrator in Mississippi. He was a principal or school superintendant at Duck Hill, Edwards, Oxford, and Utica, and Raymond, MS. In 1944, he became Dean of Men at Hinds Junior College (now Hinds Community College). In 1948, he became Dean of Instruction, a position he held until his retirement in 1964.
He and his wife Dorothy were married Sep. 4, 1921.
He was a veteran of WWI. Family history says he was named Maurice F. Herring, but the army required him to have a middle name to go with his middle initial.

Services held for M. F. Herring, former HJC dean
Maurice F. Herring, Sr., a Mississippi educator and school administrator, and former dean at Hinds Junior College, died last Monday morning, September 26 at the University Hospital in Jackson. He had been ill for several months.
He was a native of Montgomery County, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack E. Herring. He had lived in Raymond for the past 22 years. He was formerly with the public schools in Duck Hill, Edwards, Oxford, Utica, and Raymond. In 1944 he became associated with Hind Junior College as Dean of Men and later as Dean of Instruction, which position he held until his retirement in 1964.
He served as a director of the Capitol Area Regional Library for more than 20 years, and at the time of his death was serving as trustee of the Baptist Children's Village.
Mr. Herring was a member of the Raymond Baptist Church serving actively in numerous positions. He was a veteran of World War I.
He was a graduate of Big Black High School at Kilmichael, and attended the 50-year reunion of his senior class held at the school several months ago.
His survivors are his wife, the former Dorothy Locke of Montgomery county; three daughters, Mrs. Richard K. Foster of Raymond, Mrs. Frank E. Berry Jr., of Vicksburg, and Mrs. C. W. Norman of Lake Jackson, Texas; two sons, Dr. Maurice F. Herring Jr., of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dr. Jack L. Herring of Sanatorium; his [step]mother, Mrs. Emma F. Herring of Winona; 15 grandchildren; one great, grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. A. B. Blass Sr., of Monroeville, Ala., Mrs. Floyd Darnell of Okolona, and Mrs. L. B. Barnes of Starkville; and two brothers, Howard P. Herring, also of Monroeville, and Arnold T. Herring of Winona.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Raymond Baptist Church, with the Rev. James E. Smith, pastor, and Dr. Jerry Breazeale, former pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Raymond cemetery with deacons of Raymond Baptist serving as pallbearers.
