Mary Margaret Collins was born in Marble Falls, Texas in 1893 to Ida Barber and Uriah Collins. The family moved to Vernon and then Itasca, TX. In 1898, the family moved to Fisher, Fisher County, Texas to the ranch of her grandfather, Stillman Barber. In 1910, the family moved to Abilene to provide better educational opportunities for the children. Mary earned the B.A. degree from Simmons College in 1917 and the M.A. degree in 1941.
Mary worked as dietitian at the dormitories at Hardin-Simmons University. In 1955, she and her father Uriah Collins moved to Alvin, next door to her sister Susie and her husband C.P. Strickland. She cared for her father until his death in 1960. In Alvin, she worked as Director of Food Services for the Alvin Independent School District.
Mary and her sister Ida Jane hosted Christmas Eve dinner for their extended family. Mary was quiet and sweet, smiling easily and often. Mary was a talented baker, seamstress and quilter. She was active in her church, South Park Baptist in Alvin.
