Hugh H. Cowley, 86, of St. Johns, died Oct. 11, 2003.
He was born July 15, 1917, in St. Johns. Hugh lived his entire life in St. Johns. Cowley Bros. Supply, operated by Hugh and his brother, Bud, drilled many water wells in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado in years past. Hugh served as the sixth mayor of St. Johns, serving for four years and also as a city councilman for six years. In recent years, Hugh ran Cowley's and sold parts, well supplies and welding equipment. Fixing small engines, alternators, generators and starters was his specialty. He was known for his talent of being able to fix anything or find a part that no one else could find. He worked daily until the age of 83 and was revered as a great asset to the community for his expertise and service.
He will be missed by his wife Helen; his children Christine and David Neal, Tempe, Duke and Alice Cowley, Phoenix, Janet and Larry Rogers of Springerville, Charles and Teresa Cowley of Salt Lake City, Utah and Margret and William Bond of Spokane, Washington. Hugh is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his three brothers and two sisters.
Services were in St. Johns, at the Downtown Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Wednesday, Oct. 15. Contributions may be made to RTA Hospice.
