Birth: Feb. 25, 1844
Whitley County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Jul. 10, 1920
McCreary County
Kentucky, USA

Mary Ellen "Polly" (King) Angel was born in the Marsh Creek area of McCreary Co., KY , then a part of Whitley Co. Polly is an old time nickname for Mary.

Polly's birth year is debatable. Her headstone says she was born on Feb. 25, 1842. In the 1850 US Census Polly is listed as being born in 1844, two years after Jackson. The 1860 census shows her again as two years younger than Jackson. Later censuses give her year of birth as 1844 (twice), 1841 and 1842.

We know that her older brother Jackson "Jack" King (1842-1919) was born on July 17, 1842 in Campbell Co., Tennessee. Six of seven US Censuses in which Polly appears says she was born in Kentucky. It is obvious that they were not fraternal twins.

The informant for her delayed death certificate gave her year of birth as 1846 but did not know her date of birth nor who her mother was. The unknown informant probably just knew her approximate age.

Considering all of the above information I believe that her year of birth on her headstone to be incorrect, that it should be 1842, not 1844. The date of birth, Feb. 25, may be correct.

Polly was the daughter of Enos King (1816-1891) and Nancy Ann Angel (1820-1891). She was the second of their twelve known children. The family moved from Campbell Co., TN to Whitley Co., KY about 1843.

Polly was a granddaughter of Thomas Murray King (1790-1880), the patriarch of the Kings in McCreary Co., Kentucky. Her paternal grandmother was Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881. Both were probably born in North Carolina and migrated to Kentucky from Campbell Co., Tennessee.

Polly's maternal grandparents were Archibald Andrew "Arch" Angel (1775-1847) and Nancy Ann Trammell (1782-1829), both were born in North Carolina. By 1804 (the year of their marriage) both of their families had migrated to eastern Tennessee.

About 1862 Polly married Archibald Angel (1841-1901), a native of Whitley Co., Kentucky. He was the son of James Henry Angel (1806-1887) and Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" King (1813-bef 1880). Not long after their marriage Archibald joined the Union Army (49th KY Infantry, Co., Private) and fought in the Civil War.

Polly and Archibald were married for nearly 40 years and had 11 known children. Their children were Nimrod Angel (1861-1931), Enos Angel (1865-1958), Lewis Angel (1868- ?), James Simpson Angel (1871-1922), Nancy A. "Alvie" Angel (1873-1922), Colleen Carolina Angel (1874-1936), Celena Angel (1875- ?), William Angel (1879-1926), Rachel Leona Angel (1881-1966), Mary Ellen Angel (1882-1971) and Archibald "Arch" Angel (1884-1971).

Polly's husband Archibald died in 1901 at the age of 60. He was buried in the Angel-Wright Cemetery located in Scott Co., Tennessee and has a Civil War military grave marker.

Polly was about 76 when she died on July 10, 1920 as the result of heart disease. Like her husband, she was buried in the Angel-Wright Cemetery in Scott Co., Tennessee. The inscription on her headstone reads "My God shall supply all of your needs."
