George B. (Shorty) Byrne, 51, a native of Silver Cliff and long-time prominent Custer county businessman, died here Wednesday morning, March 31, of cancer. He was born March 19, 1920. He graduated from Custer County high school in 1938 and had spent practically all his life in the county. He was married to Miss Frances Falkenberg of Westcliffe in South Gate, Calif. on July 26, 1941. He served with the Marines in the South Pacific theatre of operations during World War II. Shorty was a plumber by trade. About 18 years ago he and Fred Luthi established the L&B Gas Service in addition to plumbing. About 10 years ago Shorty purchased Fred's share of the partnership. Shorty was a member of the Spencer-Young Post No. 1321 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Westcliffe, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 610 in Caņon City and of Silver Cliff Lodge No. 38 AF&AM. Besides his wife Frances, he is survived by daughters, Kathleen Everett of Collbran, Maureen Markham of Denver, Coleen Byrne, a student at Colorado State university at Fort Collins, Debbie Byrne, a student at Western State college at Gunnison, and Patti, and a son, Bernie of the home in Silver Cliff. He is also survived by a sister, Inis Falkenberg of Westcliffe and a brother, Pat Byrne of Bellevue, Wash; and three grandchildren, Kelly, Timothy and Theresa Everett. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at St. Luke's Episcopal church in Westcliffe with Father Harlow Donovan officiating. Burial will be in Ula cemetery under direction of the Menzel Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Fritz Erps, Jr., Fred Luthi, Gayle Patterson, Lawerence Jones, Myron Chesley and Albert Walters. Honorary pallbearers will be Augie Menzel, Albert Voss, Ben Kettle, Art Hibbs, Lawrence Entz, Bill McCarty, Fritz Erps, Sr. and Jess Kennon.
