Isabella Calmes3 Richardson "Isa Ann" [Mrs Philip Bowman #1] (William C.,

Isabella carried the illustrious name of her grandmother and the blood
lines of two famous families, the Calmes and Richardsons. Without question
Isabella is the daughter of William Richardson. The proof is found is several
Frederick County Virginia deeds and indentures where Philip Bowman is providing
money to clear obligations of William Richardson, the father of his wife Isabella
(Deed book 45, p.200; 1823 deed book 47, p.66). An 1823 indenture, deed book
47, p.112, describes Philip Bowman's purchase of encumbered land Isabella
inherited from her father. Some researchers have erroneously named Isabella as
the daughter of her uncle Samuel Marques Calmes and Catherine B. (Hall)
Richardson.

Isabella is buried in a cemetery carrying the name as "Bowman Cemetery"
on the gate. It is located on Hwy 56, between Rising Sun and Aberdeen,
South-central Ohio County, IN. The inscription on her tombstone reads: In
memory of Isabella Bowman - Consort of Philip Bowman who departed this life
April 1, 1828 - In the 39 year of her age. {photo by John S. Dorrell 4Aug2000}
There are two other Bowman graves in this cemetery but the stones are
illegible.



She married Philip Bowman, son of Isaac Bowman [Captain] and Elizabeth
"Betsy" Gatewood [Mrs Isaac Bowman #1], 15 Jan 1810, in Shenandoah Co, VA22.
Born, 13 Oct 1786, in Shenandoah Co, VA23. Died, 30 Jan 1861, in Switzerland
Co, IN24. Resided in Switzerland Co, IN18.
On 28 June 1815 (Deed Bk W, p.35) Isaac and Mary Bowman deed to Philip
Bowman a ract of land containing 175 acres. This land is a tract portion that
Isaac acquired in 1800 from Jaqcob Humbert at a place called "ore bank tract"
with buildings, improvements & water rights. Philip & Isabella sold 32 acres of
this tract to David Stickley in Dec 1815 (D Bk W, p.290).
On Aug 8, 1818 Philip & Isabella sold the balance of this tract to David
Stickley alond with 95 asres (D Bk Y, p.439)

Philip sold eight negroes to William McCord & George F. Hupp on 29 May
1819 (D Bk Z, p.386)

In a Frederick County VA deed reference (bk 45, p.200) Philip Bowman of
Shenandoah Co and Wm Richardson of Frederick Co for $100 given W. Richardson,
dec'd for part of farm on which Richardson lived at the time of death & small
tract = being given to Richardson to clear a title encumbrance.

A 1823 indenture ( Frederick Co db 47, p.66) between Philip & Isabella
Bowman, one of Richardsons children, on one part = Release Richardson, his
heirs, etc, for suit then active against Richardson's estate = Philip Bowman to
be responsible for any liens. Signed by Philip & Isabella Bowman.
Another indenture (bk 47, p.112) of 14 April 1823 indicates Wm Richardson
was indebted to Phillip Bowman for $738 balance due. Philip Bowman will
purchase a tract of land Isabella inherited from her father= to be paid in
increments in March 1824 and March 1825.

Philip is the eldest son of Isaac Bowman and his first wife. Philip is
mentioned in his fathers 1824 will as having received a valuable tract of land
from Isaac and conveyed to him, before the date of the will, as his full
portion of his fathers real estate. In another paragraph Isaac Bowman indicates
he recently re-purchased the tract of land, buildings and improvements ther-on
where Philip now resides.
For some unknown reason, in another paragraph of Isaac will he leaves
what would be Philip's legacy entitlement of slaves and personal estate to
Philips several children and those yet unborn as they reach majority. In a
codicil dated 1826 Isaac declares Philip has already received his other
entitlements.
Philip Bowman moved to Switzerland County Indiana with his family and
children around 1825. His children seem to have been married in that county.
[Apparently there were other Bowman persons also in Switzerland County as there
are Bowman marriages recorded there: David 183?, George M 1819, Ellender 1820,
William 1821, Sarah 1826, & Sybil Ruth 1846.]
Living conditions in Switzerland County in the 1820 were rather
primitive, few roads. Tradition indicates the Bowman family and John Gillis
families lived next door to each other and members of the Gillis family helped
raise the Bowman Children. Son William R Bowman married the girl next door
Eleanor Gillis.
Isabella died in 1828 having lived in Indiana only a short time. Philip
remarried in 1842.



All of Philip and Isabella’s nine children were born in Virginia and lived most of their lives near southeast Indiana, leaving numerous descendants:
