Charles Anthony "Charlie" Bracht, 90, a Brownsville resident since 1934 died peacefully at Brownsville Medical Center on Thursday, November 6, 2003.
Charlie was born in Rockport, Texas on November 23, 1912 to Adolph Bracht and Gertrude Prophet Bracht. His grandfather was Victor Friederich Bracht, native of Germany and a founder of New Braunfels, Republic of Texas, in the early 19th century. He graduated from Rockport High School in 1930. He and Eugenie "Tugie" Barber were married in 1934. Together they owned Bracht Super Service Magnolia and later Bracht Paint and Glass Co.
He served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Brownsville City Commission from 1943 to 1945. During this administration, the first parking meters were installed, which saved the City many thousands of dollars through the refinancing of outstanding bonds. Also, the procedure to establish the Public Utility Commission began, which culminated in the establishment of the Public Utility Board in July 1960.
He served two appointed terms on the Brownsville Housing Authority Commission from 1955 to 1959. He was a key member of the Brownsville Lions Club and instigated the sale of $2.00 bills at Gateway Bridge during the war, which netted the Lions Club in excess of $75, 000. He retired from Rio Grande Valley Gas Co. in 1976, where he had been employed as Eastern Zone Manager.
From the end of World War II until the late 1950's, each Charro Days, Charlie-dressed as a derelict, bearded peon-raised thousands of dollars for the benefit of the Crippled Children's' Clinic, now known as the Moody Clinic.
Charlie was preceded in death by Tugie, his wife of 66 years.
He is survived by his children, Barbara Grove of Austin, Texas, Janice Sonnen of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and Chuck Bracht of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; niece, Joan Grotzinger of Brownsville and other nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
