Johannes is the first of six children and two sons from the first marriage of Jan Johannes van der Tuin, with Hiltje Sikkes Hoeksma, named for his grandfather Johannes Linses van der Tuin.
In May 1888 farmhand Johannes marries to his almost 19 years younger housemaid Margje Groen. From April 1889 until September 1892 they get the children Jan (John), Johannes (Hannes) and Hiltje (Hilda) in house number 25/2 in the dairy farmers village Oldelamer in the southern part of the Dutch province Friesland.
In March/April 1893 the family emigrates on the SS Veendam of the HAL with Margje's parents and siblings to the Platte colonies in Charles Mix County, in southeastern South Dakota. Here they get the children Anna (June 1894), Elisabeth (Lizzie, May 1896) and Sikke (Sip, Jan. 1898). In 1898/1899 the family moves to a farm 2 1/2 mile southwest of the Dutch agrarian settlement New Holland in Douglas County, SD, where the children Albert (Dec. 1899), Bonne (July 1901), Jochem (July 1904) and Adrian (Ed, June 1908) Vander Tuin were born.
Between 1940 and 1945 his sons moved to a farm 3/4 mile south of New Holland.
The Vander Tuins are Christian Reformed (Gereformeerd).
