In April 1893 he emigrated with his parents and siblings to the "Dutch" Platte area in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, where he lived most of his life, except for some years in California. In March 1905 he marries in Castalia Township, near Platte, Charles Mix County, to Elizabeth Woudstra and they live in Signal Township near Platte. According to the Census 1910 he lives then with his wife and four children in Forbes Township, Charles Mix County, also near Platte. According to the Census 1920 he lives then with his wife and seven children Groen in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. His wife Elizabeth Woudstra Groen dies in Feb. 1921 at the age of about 39 years, leaving him with seven or eight children. The names of their children are Hattie (Plooster), Anna (Westra), Edith (Monze), Hans, Margaret (Carter), John, Gertrude (De Raad), Elizabeth (Betty Kuipers) and Albert, who died in 1920 in infancy. The family farmed north of Platte, moving away after the children grew up. The children live in 2008 in Platte, California, Denver, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
