Birth: Sep. 15, 1843
Northumberland County
Ontario, Canada
Death: Sep. 9, 1899
De Tour Village
Chippewa County
Michigan, USA

John A. Hart was born 15 Sep 1843 in Seymour Twp., Northumberland, Ontario, Canada {there's a chance he may have been born in England; still researching. For example, son George Hart shows his father b. England in his 1920 U.S. Census record}. John was the fourth child of seven children (2nd son) born to William and Mary (Bright) Hart. Both of his parents were from England, possibly Kent or Dorset {still researching}. Their first three children, Emma, Mary Ann, and George {John's siblings} were born in England. John's siblings:

1-Emma Eleanor (or J?) Hart (1837 England–aft. 02 Jun 1911 prob. Peterborough Co.) m. Absolom Brown, no ch.

2-George Hart (1841 England–1914 Michigan) m. 1st Annie E. Middaugh (aka Meadows); 9 ch.; m. 2nd Sarah (Robinson) Hart, his brother John's widow

3-Mary Ann Hart (1841 England–d. ?)

4-Sarah Hart (abt. 1849 Canada–d. ?)

5-Susan Hart (abt. 1854 Canada-d. ?)

6-Edgar Hart (1859 Canada-1886 Canada); killed by a tree

John's parents emigrated from England to the Bruce Peninsula of Canada between 1841 and 1849 and John was born during this time period. Some records suggest he may have been baptised in Dorset, England, but more information is needed to confirm this and most other records indicate he was born in Ontario, Canada.

John, his parents and siblings appear in the 1851 and 1861 Canada Censuses in Seymour, Northumberland, Ontario. Except for his brother George with wife Annie Elizabeth Meadows in Greenock, Bruce Co., Ontario, the family has not been found in the 1871, 1881 Canada Censuses. Their father William might be with a 2nd wife Isabella in 1871 in Greenock, but this still is being researched.

By 1875, John was living in Greenock, Bruce, Ontario. In nearby Kincardine on 31 Aug 1875, at the age of almost 32, John married 19-year-old Sarah Robinson of Kincardine (born and raised in nearby Normanby). There are other records that suggest she might have been as young as 14 at the time of their marriage. Their children:

1-William Henry Hart (b. 14 Jun 1876, Riverdale, Ontario, Canada; d. 29 Oct 1940, Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, MI USA) m. Nellie Harriett "Lillian" Stratton, 10 ch.

2-Mary Ann "Marion" Hart (b. 04 Jun 1878, Kincardine, Bruce, Ontario, Canada; d. 24 Mar 1941, Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, MI USA); m. James B. Douglas, 7 ch.

3-George Isaac Hart (b. 19 Jun 1880, Chippewa Co., MI; d. ?); m. 1st cousin Sarah Jane Hart, 9 ch.

By 01 Jun 1880, John & Sarah's family had removed to Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa Co., Michigan, USA and their third and last child, George was born there a few weeks after the 1880 US Census.

John was the original settler of the Hart Settlement named after him and later called Schlesser after its first postmaster, John Schlesser. His brother George and wife Annie Meadows Hart joined John & Sarah's family from Ontario, and by 1892 there were two businesses owned by John's father-in-law (possibly brother-in-law) Benjamin Robinson and Mr. Schlesser. John, George and Mr. Schlesser all served as officers in the District 3 school located in the Hart Settlement, and John served as the Schlesser postmaster after John Schlesser's death.

John died in Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, Michigan on 09 Sep 1899, of cerebral thrombosis; his physician notes on his death certificate that "history of his case dates back to 1888 with vertigo, --- heart, and blurred vision" -- some 11 years earlier. John passed away just four months after the wedding of his firstborn son, William Henry to Nellie Harriet (Lillian) Stratton in the Sault. His wife, Sarah, went on to marry twice more before she died in 1934.
