Death: Feb. 7, 1907

H. K. W. (Harris Kendricks Wylie) Childress was born in Chulahoma, Mississippi 'Hill Country' and was married twice, first to Martha Eliza Bell (1853 - 1887) the daughter of Elijah H. Bell and Martha E. Miles, and second to Mary Julia Gay. He enlisted with Mississippi 19 Reg't Co. I 25 May 1861. He was wounded at the Battle of Gaines Mill and subsequently lost his left arm to amputation, after which he continued his military service as a hospital orderly. After the war he and his family moved to Douglas GA where despite his disability he became a farmer. After the death of his first wife, he moved to Atlanta GA, remarried, and created the 'Veterans Broom Works' a family business which manufactured and sold brooms. He demonstrated great strength and character throughout his life which continues to be a positive influence on his descendants.

He and his wife Martha Eliza Bell were the parents of eight children, four were born in Chulahoma:

reads Pvt 'Co I 2 Regt GA Inf CSA' but that is incorrect, he did collect his pension in GA but records show he served with 19 Regt Co I Mississippi CSA, as he had moved with his family to GA after the war.

My great-grandfather Harris Kendricks Wylie Childress born Chulahoma, Mississippi. The CSA inscription is incorrect, he was with the 19th Mississippi Co. I Marshall Rifles, muster 12 Jun 1861. I thank him for his service.
