TELL CITY: Mrs. Gertrude E. Champion, 79, died at 7:51 Sunday, Jan. 15 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
A native of Perry County, Mrs. Champion was born June 27, 1904, near the German Ridge area, the daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Aichelmann) Lauer.
Mrs. Champion was a graduate of Rome High School, University of Evansville and Locklear Business College. A former school teacher, she moved in 1956 to Indianapolis where she was employed at Butler University in Indianapolis in the registration office. In 1979 she retired and returned to Perry County to make her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Champion, in 1946; also four brothers, Armin, Alfred, Norman and Clarence Lauer; and two sisters, Amelia Cleland and Edna Kuebler. She was affiliated with the Methodist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Donald and Eddie, both of Tell City, and Paul of Troy; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services were held at 2 pm. Wednesday (today) at Huber Funeral Home in Cannelton, the Rev. David Powell officiated, with burial in Wegenast Cemetery in Rome.
