(special thanks to Susan B. Lehman, great great granddaughter, for the following info) William Hopkins Bailey was born on 22 October 1830 in Clairborne Parish, Louisiana and died on 22 April 1919 in Athens, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana.
He married, Susan Elizabeth Turner, his first wife on 22 Oct 1866 in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. She was born on 24 November 1848 in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, the daughter of Cornelius M. "Neal" Turner and Martha Jane Brantley and died on 10 January 1880 in Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana. William & Susuan had six (6) children: Jesse, Cornelia, Willia May, John Loy, Viola, and William Turner.
William's second wife was Laura Jane Beard, who is buried beside him, see her bio on her record, they were married on 27 September 1883 after his first wife died.
William Hopkins Bailey served in the Civil War and was a member of the famous "Minden Blues" who came down from Adkins'Landing, via Red River, to New Orleans, Louisiana on the Steamer Eleanor, arrived 14 June 1861 and enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company I, 8th Louisiana Infantry on 23 Jun 1861 as Pct. Sergt. He was wounded 27 June 1862 which left a scar visible on his left cheek which is visible in photo. He was taken Prisoner of War and exchanged at Cox's Landing, Virginia on 14 Feb 1865.
He was a farmer and lived all his life within a 50-mile radius in Northern Louisiana, except for time served in during the War Between the States and 2 years he lived in Lafayette, Louisiana.
