Staff Sergeant Thomas S. Cox was awarded the United States Air Force Commendation Medal on August 2, 1977, which was accompanied by the following citation: "Staff Sergeant Thomas S. Cox distinguished himself by meritorious service as Hospital Unit Manager, Registrar Functions, United States Air Force Hospital Elmendorf, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska from 27 September 1974 to 27 September 1977. During this period, Sergeant Cox exhibited superior technical skill and administrative knowledge in the performance of his related duties. By tireless effort, leadership and unexcelled dedication to duty, he contributed immeasurably to the mission effectiveness of the United States Air Force Hospital Elmendorf. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Cox reflect credit on himself and the United States Air Force."
A funeral service was held on August 23, 1984 at Euclid Avenue Christian Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Mr. Cox is buried in the Alcorn family plot in the Sprindale Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.
