Birth: Nov. 14, 1894, Germany
Death: Jun. 7, 1963
Baltimore City

William Haussner was the immigrant success story. A 'Master Chef' he arrived from Germany in 1927 and opened a restaurant on Eastern Avenue in Baltimore that bore his name. In 1935, he married fellow German immigrant, Frances Wilke after a courtship of 3 weeks. It would be a happy and prosperous marriage. In the late 1930s, they moved the restaurant to a bigger location on the same avenue. In 1939 to mark their 4th anniversary, William and his wife Frances bought their first piece of artwork at auction. Over the years, they accumulated over 150 pieces of artwork from auctions, private sales, estates. They never paid out more than $ 3,000.00 for any one piece. Their expertly prepared food became quite reknowned. H.L. Mencken said that HAUSSNER'S RESTAURANT was one of the world's best. No question though, in time it was Baltimore's most famous restaurant. Between the superb food and the immense artwork on display, most Baltimoreans recall the then world's largest 'Ball of String', the paintings and the heavy Tuetonic decor. The restaurant survived for 30 years after the death of its founder. When the estate of the Haussner's artworks went to auction with Sotheby's in New York in 1999, it brought in over $ 10,000,000.00
