John W. enrolled as a private during the War of Northern Aggression.He served in Company K, 1st Virginia Infantry,Csa

He was taken prisoner by Union forces under the command of Gen.Armstrong Custer, April 6,1865 at Saylers Creek near Farmville,Virginia with most of his division.

John was shipped to and confined at the Federal Military Prison at Point Lookout,St. Marys County,Maryland.He was released June 21,1865.

Baumgartner, Welcome of Wythe County VA 77 years, 3 months and 15 days old died of cancer on 7/10/1898 survived by 5 sons and 1 daughter. He was a member of St. John's E. L. Church. His wife preceded him in death. He lived with his son Robert G. Baumgartner near Wytheville VA. Burial was in the Church Cemetery. Lutheran Visitor 7/28/1898, page 6
