PIONEER MILLER DIED HERE LAST SATURDAY

H. B. Wollam Came to Traverse des Sioux in 1857, Was 72 Years Old

H.B. Wollam, one of the early residents of Traverse des Sioux and well known here, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. W.O. Layton, on Saturday from a long illness due to heart trouble. He had been in failing health for some time and his death was not unexpected, although he had not been seriously ill for any length of time. Deceased was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Wollam, who came to Traverse des Sioux in 1857, when he was a lad of seven years, and remained here after establishing their home in the new territory then opened up. He was past 79 years of age and was born in Columbia County, Ohio, January 22, 1851.

Mr. Wollam followed the trade of miller and his occupation took him to many of the large eastern cities where he was engaged in operating some of the largest flour mills of the country during the World War. Before going east, he was employed in most of the large mills of Minnesota and became proficient in his trade. He returned to St. Peter a few years ago to make his home with his sister and has spent his declining years here among his boyhood friends. Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. H.O. Bates of Mountain Lakes, NJ, who will be unable to attend his funeral owing to ill health; two sisters, Mrs. W.O. Layton of this city, and Mrs. Margaret Volk of Mankato, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held from the undertaking parlors of Hanson & Smesrud yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. P.W. Lidden in charge. Interment was made in Green Hill Cemetery with the following friends acting as pallbearers: Judge Henry Mill, Claus Swanson, S.E. Haney, C.J.Norman, M.L. Clark, and H. Zimmerman.
