Eva Lynne Ashlock-Huff,75, of St. Joseph, formerly of Berrien Springs, died peacefully on Friday morning, Aug. 20, 2004, at Woodland Terrace Assisted Living in Bridgman.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today in Pioneer Memorial Church, on the campus of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, where friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 4 p.m. until service time. Private burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials in her honor may be made to the Khasi Memorial Fund, 10122 Crestmont Drive, Collegedale, Tenn. 37363. Arrangements are entrusted to Allred Funeral Home, Berrien Springs.
Eva Lynne Ashlock was born May 23, 1929, to Frank and Marcella Ashlock while they were missionaries in Poona, India. She had an older brother, Tom, and would soon have a younger brother, Jim. She married Gerald Herdman while they were in college in Takoma Park, Md., in 1950. Their son Douglas was born in 1952, and son David was born in 1954. During 1959, the family moved to Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, and Eva Lynne began work as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in St. Joseph. In 1964 she was invited to supervise the Student Health Service on the campus of what was now Andrews University. She left in 1970 to work in the St. Joseph office of Dr. Wilson, an obstetrician, where she continued until 1980 when her marriage to Gerald was dissolved. For two years she lived in Worthington, Ohio, and worked at Harding Hospital. She then moved back to Takoma Park for six years and worked again at Washington Adventist Hospital.

An errand of mercy for several months in 1988, to help Douglas and his wife with their toddler and premie twins in Dayton, Ohio, created contact with a friend from 1948. This time, her friendship with Richard Huff developed into much more, and they were married in 1989 and made their home in St. Joseph. With her return to Michigan, she began work for Riverwood Center in Benton Harbor as a mental health nurse. Eva Lynne worked there for more than 13 years, until the distraction and struggle with her cancer required a stop.

Eva Lynne is survived by her husband, Richard Huff; two brothers, Tom and Jim Ashlock; two sons, Doug and Dave Herdman; and five grandchildren -- Catherine and Nicole Herdman, and Jared, Ross, and Ryan Herdman.
