Mabel Wenning Chelette was born in Palmyra, Indiana on January 19, 1915. She went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2013. All those who knew Mabel will miss her spirit, sense of humor and general “sassiness.”

The soundtrack for Mabel’s life could easily have been, “I Did It My Way.” The youngest of six children, Mabel grew up on a farm in southern Indiana. While in high school, she enjoyed playing basketball and the piano and being in the senior play. Mabel left Indiana for Texas in 1947, originally to Texas City and then on to San Antonio, where she raised her daughter, Peggy. When her daughter moved to Austin to be married, Mabel moved there also. In Austin, Mabel worked at the Texas Department of Public Safety until she retired. After retirement, Mabel bought a house in Kingsland, where she enjoyed living in the country once again. She kept busy playing in a washtub “Klunker” band, attending auctions, and working at her church.

Throughout her life, Mabel had a passion for travel. In addition to many states in the US, she also traveled to Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Mexico and England Never one to sit still, she was always up for a trip or adventure.

Mabel is survived by her daughter, Peggy Glass Gentry; granddaughter, Allison Glass-Smith and her husband, GW Smith; granddaughter, Kristin Glass; and great grandchildren, Grayson Moore and Taylor Moore.

The family would like to express deepest appreciation to the staff at Emeritus at Beckett Meadows and Stonebridge for their care, kindness and support.

A Memorial Service will be held at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Texas 78745. Visitation will be at Harrell Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be made to Austin Samaritans, P.O. Box 161074, Austin, Texas 78716
