Died--At her home in Oklahoma, Sunday, August 2nd, Mrs. Goen. Funeral services tomorrow (Tuesday) at Leesburg at 2 o'clock p.m. Mrs. Goen lived near Leesburg for a number of years before moving to Oklahoma, and is well known and highly respected by all. Besides an aged husband she leave a number of children to mourn for her. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community.
(Note: Although several additional issues were read, no correction of the misspelling of her surname was found. The next week's issue included: "The funeral of Mrs. Eliza Goen was largely attended. Rev. J. Sniffon officiated." This was also published under Uncle Jack's Leesburg column on the back page.)
Eliza Howard was the youngest child of Daniel and Mary Howard and the only one born in Iowa, probably in Cedar County where her dad farmed. Her older siblings, Danel Jr., Anna, Mary J. and Elizabeth were all born in Indiana, her dad in Vermont and her mom in Ketucky. It is possible that her husband's family and her own had been friends for generations.
