Edith Gorman Bond, of Waco, passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at First Baptist Church of Waco, with Dr. Gary Cook and Dr. David Matthews officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Edith was born in Ennis, Texas, to the late Jesse and Josie Gorman, and grew up a farm girl. She met Jack Bond in those days. She matriculated from North Texas State Teachers College and taught grade school in her early professional years. She and Jack, now Dr. T.J. Bond, moved to Waco where he joined the faculty at Baylor University. While she was raising her family, she founded the first day school at First Baptist Church in the 1950s. She went on to become assistant to the Chaplain, Dr. W.J. Wimpee, at Baylor. She and Jack sponsored the Athenean sorority at Baylor which later became the Baylor chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. When Jack died in 1981, Edith began a second career which included trips with Baylor in the British Isles program for a number of years. She became close friends with a number of notable leaders including distinguished British M.P. Sir Bernard Braine and former President Jimmy Carter in his Habitat for Humanity program. In the late 1980s, she began still another career as Dean of Students at Dallas Baptist University with her friend, President Gary Cook. She counseled and befriended numerous students and faculty there until her retirement in 1999 at the age of 80. Edith was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Waco. She believed that love is the most powerful force, and she lived her belief.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jack Bond, formerly of the Baylor University faculty.
She is survived by her sons, Bob Bond and wife, Kay, of Waco and Tom Bond, of Austin; daughter, Anedith Nash, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Marcus Nash, Jason Nash, Blair Bond, Jordan Bond, Rachel Bond, and Rebecca Bond; great-grandchildren, Veronica Nash, Roan Buchholz, Lila Nash and Collette Nash; and numerous nieces and nephews.
