FRESNO, Calif. -
Ms. Roena Dyvaughn Carter, 66, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, in the Community Living Center in Fresno.
A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Roena resided in Atwater for seven years.
She was born on Jan. 18, 1945, in Fayetteville, to Roena Carter and Fred Carter.
In 1973, she graduated from North Carolina Central University with a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing. In 1975, Roena was commissioned and proudly served her country with honor at the Womack Army Medical Center in Fayetteville as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army for several years, where she supported the hospital's mission to provide the highest quality health care. She enjoyed her career and found it to be fun, pleasant, rewarding and productive until she retired in 2008.
Unable to fully commit to retirement, she volunteered her services to the American Red Cross. As a resident at the Community Care Living Center, she knew her last chapter was coming to a close; however, she continued her passion of nursing by comforting and talking to others, making friends and offering her genuine care of healing to other residents at the center. A caring Christian, Roena was an active member of her church, where she was ordained as an elder and became a leader.
Roena is survived by her best friend and loving daughter, Santanya Fahie; brothers, Ray, Ralph and Alonzo; sisters, Gwendolyn, Joyce, Margaret and Verlena; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and all who were touched by her love, compassion and kindness.
Funeral services will be held today, Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel, 1480 B St. in Merced. Burial will be in Riverside National Cemetery.
