A view of the late Ed Murphy, born November 24, 1885 in Grapeland, Texas. His parents were Laura Gilmore and Vol Murphy. After the untimely death of his mother, he moved to Crockett, Texas and the Wheeler Springs Community and was raised by his father.
Vol Murphy was one of the first settlers in the Wheeler Springs Community. He was brought up in a single parent home, he and his father were very close. They purchased 106 acres of property and farmed to pay for it.
When he became an adult, and his father married, he decided to leave home and relocated to Greenwood, Mississippi, where he started a new life. He worked as a sharecropper on a plantation. He was always a religious man, and he united with the Johnson Chapel Baptist Church and later became a, deacon. In the year of 1928, he learned of the death of his father and he returned home. He brought with him a young wife, Willie Murphy and two young children, Charlie Murphy age 4 and Lula Murphy age 2. This was in 1928, after returning home, he united with the Wheeler Springs Baptist Church, after being in the community for awhile, GOD gave him a vision to build a better Church to worship in.
This committee was led by Bro Ed Murphy, and in the same year the Church was built and organized. Bro Ed Murphy was the first Deacon of this Church and served as chairman, of the deacon board for many years. He served faithfully until his death in 1962.
He will be remembered by the hard work he did around the Church and its upkeep.
