Birth: Nov. 9, 1872
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Sep. 17, 1959
York County
Pennsylvania, USA

Jacob Tobias graduated from Berrysburg Academy, located in Mifflin Twp., Dauphin county, PA, and attended Millersville State College, Lancaster, PA, completing his course work at the Univ. of Florida, and Southern Methodist College in Lakeland, FL. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He taught school in Enterline, Wayne Twp., and in Lykens Twp., Dauphin county, PA, before moving to Florida in 1910 at the age of 38. An attendance "pupil" card for Enterline School for the years 1895-1896 has survived, indicating J.T. Hoffman as teacher. Jacob had a perfect school attendance record for fifty years. Forty of these years were spent as Principal of Gary Elementary School, in the Hillsborough School System, Tampa, FL. He was a fifty year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Halifax, PA, and a member of the Tampa Heights Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. He is buried in Myrtle Hill Memorial Park, Tampa, FL, along with his wife Elsie, daughter Naomi, and son George Nathanial. He, along with Aaron Hoffman, his brother, are fondly remembered by this compiler. These two brothers, in particular, were very close, and this compiler remembers "Uncle Jake" with much affection, but somewhat in "awe" of him because of his physical stature, and because he reminded me of the school "truant officer" in a favorite children's book. Aaron would travel to Tampa to visit with Jake during the cold winters, quite regularly on a yearly basis; likewise Jake would regularly travel north to Pennsylvania in the summertime. He had a "bedroom" named after him at his brother's home in Halifax. It was always referred to as "Uncle Jake's Room". In the winter of 1953, when this compiler was 5 years of age, she accompanied her Aunt Arlene and Uncle Abie, and "Pop-Pop" Hoffman to Florida from Pennsylvania for this yearly "winter" visit. I remember picking oranges in his back yard, watching the Gasparilla parade, going to Cyprus Gardens, and visiting with 2nd cousins Joanne and Pamela Sue Hoffman, Jake's granddaughters. A funeral mourner's card exists, noting Jake's final resting place in Myrtle Hill Memorial Park, Tampa, Florida. The card notes that he was 86 years, 10 months, and 8 days old at time of death. Much of the information gathered for this bio was sent to this compiler by Jake's son, Dr. Darwin Hoffman.
