The political entity at the time of his birth was Posen, Prussia, Germany -- in the town of Ragasen. I'm confined by the modern political default choices in the software. The Darrs were ethnic Germans and spoke German.

His tragic accidental death was covered in the newspaper:

_____________

Richard Ludwig Wilhelm Darr was killed by the falling upon him of a log he was rolling, while at work upon the skidway in one of the Fence River Lumber Company's camps, near Witbeck, Mich., on the 19th ultimo. Death was instantaneous. His remains were conveyed to Pensaukee the following day, accompanied by a fellow workman. Funeral services were held at the Brookside school house the following Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Eisenbach, of the German Lutheran church of Oconto.

Mr. Darr was a stepson of Fred Shunke; was born in Ragasen, Province Posen, Prussia. His age was 25 years, 11 months and 25 days. His parents came to this country in 1856 [sic -- multiple family census records indicate about 1880], when Richard was 13 [sic -- age 10] years old, and settled in the town of Pensaukee, which had been his home ever since. The entire community deeply deplore his death, and all share the grief borne by his relatives. His parents, a brother and two sisters survive him.
