Anchorage resident Franklin Lee "Frank" Gatlin, 71, died peacefully Feb. 8, 2004, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Anchorage Senior Center. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Thursday at Witzleben Family Funeral Home. Mr. Gatlin was born Oct. 26, 1932, in Jennings, Okla., to Ellis and Ruby Gatlin. After graduating from Cushing High School, he enlisted in the military. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars and was awarded many medals and commendations throughout his 23-year career. During this time he met and married Motoyo in 1965 in Japan. His last assignment in the U.S. Army brought him to Anchorage in 1972. When he retired in 1973, he made Anchorage his home. He began his second career as the Army JROTC instructor at Bartlett High School, where he enjoyed teaching for 20 years. His family wrote: "After retirement in 1993, he took up full-time his favorite passion, fishing. When he wasn't fishing, he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, ballroom dancing and telling jokes to his many friends. Not only did he enjoy his own endeavors, but he backed his wife's passion of Ikenobo Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), to which he devoted countless hours of support. "He was a devoted husband, father and friend. His kindness, generosity and genuine love of life will be greatly missed by all who knew him." Mr. Gatlin is survived by his wife, Motoyo; his son, Robert; and his daughter, Tania. Memorial donations may be made to the American Stroke Association.
