Anchorage Daily News September 1, 2004

Longtime Anchorage resident Clyde "Red" Cross, 70, died Aug. 27, 2004, at the Mary Conrad Center. A visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m., with a service at 3 p.m., Thursday at Witzleben Funeral Home. The Rev. Fisher will officiate. Mr. Cross' ashes will be laid to rest at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be after the service at the VFW Post 10252, 3105 Mountain View Drive. Mr. Cross was born June 28, 1934, in Hood River, Ore., to Mary Winiford and Robert Cross. The family moved to Portland, Ore., when Mr. Cross was 5 years old. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-55 aboard the USS Epperson DDE719 during the Korean War. After his ship was no longer engaged in battle in Korea, he was stationed in Pearl Harbor. After his military service, Mr. Cross met and married Shirley Ann and they had two children, Julie and Michael Cross. He and his wife moved to Anchorage in 1983. Their daughter followed in 1984. His family wrote: "Mr. Cross worked hard as a diesel mechanic and retired in 1996. He also played hard and enjoyed life to its fullest. "Mr. Cross was an active member of the VFW and served as commander in 1987-88. He also held other positions at the post, where he had many friends. "He loved Alaska and was at his happiest fishing with his wife, daughter, friends and most of all his grandson, Michael, whom he called 'my buddy.' " " 'Red' never met a person he didn't like and they all liked him back. He will be truly missed." Mr. Cross is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Julie; and four grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Linsey and Colton Cross; siblings, Shirley Nelson of Gresham, Ore., Jerrie Yaconitti of Pompano, Fla., Glen Cross of Grants Pass, Ore., Richard Cross of Hillsboro, Ore., Lyle Cross of Missoula, Mont., and Margery Lindeliem of Port Angeles, Wash. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests donations to Alzheimer's Resource Agency of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage 99507. Arrangements are with Witzleben Family Funeral Home.
