Mr. Beckner died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. He was born Aug. 20, 1914, near Howard, the son of Robert and Cora Bruton Beckner. He graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1935. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and Colorado State College of Education in Greeley. Mr. Beckner taught in rural schools in Elk County and public schools in Moline, Grenola and Neodesha. He served as an elementary principal in Moline and Grenola as well as at South Elementary, Central Elementary and Heller Elementary schools in Neodesha for 28 years and retired in 1979. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Neodesha, Neewollah Campers of Independence, the National Education Assn. and Kansas National Education Assn. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, traveling, fishing and grandparenting.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Hutchinson; two daughters, Janet Roth and husband Stan, Lawrence, and Karen Gausman and husband Roger, Hutchinson; eight grandchildren, Kathie, Jon, Carl and Shannon Gausman, Jim Roth, Jane Waterman and Debby and Brad Ziegler; seven great-grandchildren, Jack, Carson, Margaret and Adam Ziegler, Tim and Alex Roth and Joshua Paul Gausman. A sister, Lucille Emery, died earlier.
