GOODRICH, Wilfred "Wiley" Wheaton Age 92, of Odessa, NY, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2003, at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility, Montour Falls, NY, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 30, 1911 in Tioga Center, NY, son of late M. Delos and Mabel Wheaton Goodrich and Ella Maude Wheaton Goodrich. Survived by his wife of 68 years, Harriette VanGorden Goodrich son, Fredrick (Joyce) Goodrich of Savanna, NY daughters, Rev. Jeanne (Del) Bleiler of Odessa, NY, and Virginia (Verne) Alexander of Odessa, NY, and Belgrade, ME sisters, Margaret Pitcher of Allegany, NY, Harriette (Ed) Lee and Mabel Lena Robinson of Owego, NY eight grandchildren eight great-grandchildren numerous nieces and nephews and his good friend, John (Jacinta) Jelliff of Montour Falls, NY. Predeceased by brothers, Hiram and Irving Goodrich and sister, Zeruah Potter.
He graduated from Tioga Central High School, received his B.S. from Cortland Normal School, and attended Elmira College, Oswego College, and Penn State University. Wilfred taught school for 50 years, beginning in a one room school house and at one time or another taught all 12 grades and all subjects. His career included 5 years at Mclean Hill School, 7 years at Owego Free Academy, and 28 years taught Industrial Arts at Odessa-Montour Central School he substituted for 12 years at S.C.T. BOCES. He drove bus for Odessa-Montour Central School for 25 years, and taught Adult Education for several years at Odessa. During WWII he taught Airplane Mechanics and Machine Shop at night classes. Wilfred served on the Board of the Town of Catharine and served as Town Supervisor for a total of 23 years.
He served on the Schuyler County Waste Management Council for a number of years. Wilfred was a staunch Republican and Rush Limbaugh fan, and a longtime member of Odessa Baptist Church. He was a gifted teacher and mechanical genius who loved working on cars, selling Chrysler automobiles, and repairing antique clocks. He was a lover of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping, as well as English Springer Spaniels and Scottish Terriers. He leaves several beloved pets behind. He was proud of his wife, his family and his country. He survived bouts of severe ill health for years and we can truly say "He fought the good fight."
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Odessa Fire Department Rescue Squad, PO Box 132, Odessa, NY 14861. There are no prior visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 8, at the Odessa Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Rev. Jeremy Spencer officiating interment in Owego-Tioga Cemetery.
