John was cremated and his ashes are interred in the Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church Columbarium, 2929 Selwyn Ave., Charlotte, N.C. 28209. The Columbarium is onsite of the church's main property. The church does not have a Cemetery.
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Copeland, 70, of Charlotte, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at The Stewart Health Care Center in Charlotte. He was born on August 19, 1935, in Greenville, son of the late Wade Dunlap Copeland and Gladys Brigman Copeland. Mr. Copeland was an honor graduate from North Carolina State University where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, received an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Copeland began his textile career with Carlton, Inc., of Cherryville and became President in 1974. He was the former President of Delta Thread Co. in Salisbury, served as head of Salisbury Heart Fund and was a member of the NC Heart Association Board of Directors, former member of the Salisbury Kiwanis Club, former member of the NC Advisory Council on Environmental Education, chairman of the Republican Executive Committee in Rowan County and treasurer of the Rowan County Young Republicans. He was installed as president of the Salisbury-Rowan YMCA in 1976, chairman of the Thread Institute in 1977 and created Copeland Confidential Business Service in 1977.
In 1979, Mr. Copeland joined American & Efird Inc., of Mount Holly and served as President from 1984-1994, and served as chairman of the Board of Directors until 1997. He was named Man of the Year by the NC State University???s student chapter of the professional fraternity Phi Psi in 1989, served as President of American Yarn Association in 1991, and in 1994 became a Director, President and Principal Executive Officer of Ruddick Corporation of Charlotte and retired in 1997. He was a member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ann Frost Copeland; daughter, Shelley Bonnin of Charlotte; son, Wes Copeland, of Salisbury; son-in-law, Joe Bonnin, of Charlotte; granddaughter, Wesley Bonnin and grandson, Ross Bonnin, both of Charlotte; brother and sister-in-law, Wade and Sid Copeland, of Durham; nephews, Will Copeland, of Durham and Allen Copeland, of Barcelona, Spain; and sister-in law, Dorothy Hawks, of Clover. His passions were racquetball, his art, and spending time at the beach with his family. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
