According to a sketch of his life, Charles was born on a farm near Llano, Texas, and established his blacksmith shop in Bandera by 1870.
Charles and Frances Pyka were married January 5, 1872 at St. Stanislaus, Bandera, Texas, and were included in the 1880 census. In 1900 the family is living on Commerce Street in San Antonio. Frances and her oldest daughter run a boarding house, and Charles and son Frank are blacksmiths.
According to another source, his blacksmith shop was on the corner of Pecos and West Travis streets. Charles worked there until he retired and turned the business over to his son Frank.
