Anna Wittekind was born in Bischofswerda, Bautzen, Sachsen, Germany to Frantz Joseph and Martha Louise (Sembtner) Wittekind. Her parents both died in 1894, when she was five years old. She grew up with her sisters in an orphanage, and as a young woman she became a nanny to another family. This family immigrated to the United States, and one of her sisters convinced her to go with them, though she did not wish to do so. She landed in New York, New York on September 30, 1908, having sailed aboard the President Lincoln.
Presumably, she followed the family she worked with to Colorado, where she met and married August Behrmann. They were wed October 24, 1912 in St. John's Lutheran Church in Denver. I've been told that she always wanted him to take her back to Germany, but they never did go back.
